The list of banished words for ’09
Neologisms and overused buzzwords: certain uses of green followed by carbon footprint are first and second respectively

The only real maverick in the race was hounded out early on.

Just because a writer recognizes something does not make it an icon (a visual symbol or representation which inspires worship or veneration) or iconic. It just means that the writer has seen it before.
This is an icon.
