• Bishop Venner’s half-right. The Taleban are determined guerrillas kicking out foreign invaders. BTW until mid-2001 the US was on speaking terms with them.
• Building a baby with a few ground rules. Every action is for an apparent good but Catholic teaching of course prevents this sort of grief.
• Niall Ferguson: we can’t afford to have the empire fail. Understandable but no.
• High-speed broadband will become almost as basic as a telephone line in the near future, the Anglican Bishop of Manchester has predicted. Of course for many of us First Worlders it already is!
• So, boomers, how’s your ‘renewal’ going? Americans’ views of the “honesty and ethics” of clergy have hit a 32-year low.
• Assisted suicide. Of course libertarians believe you can off yourself but when somebody helps you, isn’t that murder? Once heard somebody from the Hemlock Society give a lecture and it was as creepy as you might imagine.
• Obama the new Cold War liberal. Not good. Obama’s race probably played a role here. As a young thoughtful black man, he would have become familiar with prophetic Christianity and the human tendency toward corruption; familiar with the tragic sensibility of Lincoln’s second inaugural; familiar with the guarded pessimism of Niebuhr, who had such a profound influence on the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rubbish. He was raised by his white lapsed-Unitarian maternal grandparents so he’s probably the upper-middle-class agnostic he seems.
• The Anglican row and the Pope’s offer as reported in Buffalo. Worth writing but it needed research. Way to get censored by the ninny Elves: quote Chris Johnson. Just say ‘whore of Babylon’, Cameron. You know you want to.
• Answering an English article on the subject.
• This article has its biases (implied: if you want consistent doctrine like a rational adult you’re like the 9/11 terrorists) but its broad outline of Anglicanism is correct (pedantry: Henry wanted and got an annulment not a divorce but so what?). Given Anglicans’ principle of authority they don’t have a leg to stand on when criticising Canon Glasspool’s election. (That is, all Protestants are only a vote away from that.) But there won’t be a split.
