Answering LRC’s Gatto, who makes good points but... on good teachers. In my special interests I’m mostly self-taught (score one for Gatto; schools hate that) but teachers broadened my horizons so I learnt of the plight of 19th-century American Indians for example... and introduced me to seriously learning languages (Spanish, a good non-threatening starter foreign language; then they and I taught me Latin, Spanish’s mother on which I’d already made a big down payment by learning Spanish; I learnt Russian on my own). They taught me many of the basics of European history, which is to learn Catholicism. As for the gaps in my knowledge, either sloth, mea culpa, or if I don’t like it, I didn’t retain it and/or it dragged down my average.
