The American Revolution and slavery. While the lofty principles of the early American republic are good, I wonder how much of this is true, or is it just the left longing for an almighty state in which they could (benevolently, in their minds) rule? (The SWPL pulpit: ‘we’re better than you’.) Might a very residually Catholic Britain (but arguably no longer so since the English Civil War, and in practice English Calvinism in all forms, including the state one, turned left at the ‘Enlightenment’; the ruling class on both sides of the Atlantic had lots of unitarians going through the motions of Christianity) been slightly more humane to blacks than the ‘Enlightenment’-bred colonies?
