Pell’s ‘primacy of conscience’ remarks still draw flak
As conservative as I am, I think I side with Newman on this one. This has been abused a lot lately to excuse people's various favourite vices (such as sodomy) but abusus non tollit usum. There is a difference between the Catholic faith and a kind of theocratic fascism as C.S. Lewis once described this particular caricature of the faith. I imagine I'm with my spiky traditionalist friends on this one, while this proposal appeals largely to the RC neocons (EWTN, Opus Dei, Regnum Christi, charismatics) who would also love to force the Novus Ordo on one and all (and RC practices on Catholic non-Roman rites). (Based on the last time I talked to such people face to face, about eight months ago, I know that's how they think.)
