RIP William Manchester
The historian, aged 82, who brought Douglas MacArthur to life for me in American Cæsar and, years before that, made me see World War II from a realistic POV rather than the movies' way (he was there, in the Pacific, as a Marine - read Goodbye, Darkness). He also first made me aware that Lincoln really was a dictator.
