• More women prison guards... in men’s jails. Another reminder that the US has the most prisoners of any First World nation IIRC. Land of the free, doncha know. Anyway, reasons why this is a bad idea (like women as actual soldiers in combat): upper-body strength and physics. I used to know a retired guard (now dead), a son of a Russian exile; he looked a bit like Khrushchev but was the nicest man. He was built for that job.
• Pro-life activist I’ve met deported from China. He’s right but I still think such activism often is a substitute for something else like religion.
• Summer slow-news day stories like ‘staycations’ and ‘attractive white woman goes missing’.
