An anniversary of conscription in America
I find it hard to believe that Americans were ever convinced that being involuntarily sent to Europe to die in what amounted to a personal crusade against Blessed Charles of Austria was a good idea.
The liberal Protestants, who of course think they know what’s best for everyone, wanted to demolish Catholic Europe; the fundamentalists were for peace (the Southern Baptist Convention as recently as the 1930s).
