Ecce Dominus veniet

  • Advent is upon us as of I Vespers tonight; time to adjust to Alma Redemptoris Mater after Salve Regina's long yearly run. Prepare ye the way of the Lord.
  • Which means secular Christmas is upon us. I don't know how true it is anymore but in a more Christian America, the Protestants would want to come home, such is the power of the Incarnation. They forget they don't like us, put up statues of Jesus and Mary, light candles, and sing in Latin.
  • Fr. L: All the churches in the Western developed countries are seeing numbers decline. The reasons are complex, but there are two big culprits. One is simply that people are busy doing everything else on a Sunday. When the civil authorities stopped keeping Sunday special it was bound, eventually to lead to a decline in church attendance... However, there is a more profound reason for the drop in church attendance. I don’t think many people really understand (anymore) what church is FOR. In 50 years the American Catholic Church will be sound but small; the mainline will have all merged as it shrank (becoming Episcopalians even if not using that name; having bishops).
  • Meanwhile, where religion isn't just a lifestyle accessory: Before being killed, children told ISIS: "No, we love Jesus." There are still Christian martyrs.
