- Your average American Catholic. From a liberal Catholic magazine ("parish community"; snort) but still pretty good. I'm not very ethnic but I'm your lax layman from 50 years ago; I show up at Mass and hope I talk to a priest before checkout time.

A long time ago, I realised that one has to interpret "active participation" yourself. For me it means "showing up." Not "showing up on time," not "showing up and paying complete attention," and definitely not "showing up on time and following along every word in the book." Those are good, but not essential. Often it means "showing up and looking at the pictures," which in Italy is often a very good thing. But showing up is the baseline.
